The Police have arrested five men and six women, aged between 20 and 67, in a two-day enforcement operation by Central Police Division which ended on 23 September 2018. The operation targeting vice and gambling activities were conducted along Jalan Sultan Road, Middle Road and Kelantan Lane.
During the enforcement operations against vice activities, six women, aged between 20 and 31, were arrested for offences under the Women’s Charter. They are believed to have advertised their sexual services online and carried out the vice activities at hotels located along Jalan Sultan Road and Middle Road.
During the enforcement operations against gambling activities, four men, aged between 48 and 67, were arrested for public gaming at a coffee shop along Kelantan Lane. 25 stacks of poker cards and cash amounting to $324 were seized. A 41-year-old man was also arrested under the Remote Gambling Act for suspected involvement in illegal 4D collection activities.
Investigations are ongoing.
Landlords and hotel owners are advised to ensure that tenants do not carry out vice activities in their premises. Unlicensed brothel operators can be given a maximum fine of $10,000 and/or up to five years’ imprisonment. Any person who knowingly lives wholly or in part on the earnings of the prostitution of another person can be jailed up to five years and fined up to $10,000.
Under the Common Gaming House Act, any person gaming in any public shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months or to both.
Under the Remote Gambling Act 2014, an agent who organizes, manages or supervises remote gambling by others in accordance with arrangements made by a principle of the agent, which may include placing, making, receiving or accepting bets using remote communication, shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years or to both.
The Police will continue to take tough enforcement action criminal activities. Those found engaging in illicit activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
