The Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for his suspected involvement in using a credit card which belonged to a woman to make unauthorised retail purchases amounting to more than $500. 

On 31 October 2018, the Police received a report from the victim who received an alert from the bank informing her that her credit card was used for multiple transactions. Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim lost her credit card and 18 unauthorised transactions were made between 27 and 28 October 2018.

Through follow-up investigations, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established the identity of the man and arrested him on 1 November 2018. Several sports apparels which was purchased using the found credit card were seized as case exhibits.

Investigations are ongoing. Any person who is convicted for dishonest misappropriation of property shall be punished with a jail term which may extend to 2 years or a fine, or with both. If convicted for cheating, he shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall be liable to a fine.

The Police would like to take this opportunity to remind merchants and sales staff to exercise vigilance and adopt correct card acceptance procedures when processing credit card transactions. They should look out for the name and security features on the card face and if they are suspicious, they should contact their processing bank immediately for advice.
