The Police have arrested a 32-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a series of loanshark harassment cases. 
 
On 22 December 2018, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment where a residential unit along Sembawang Crescent was secured with a bicycle lock and a debtor’s note was left on the gate.
 
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from CCTV, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him along Bedok North Street 3 on 27 December 2018. Two bicycle locks, markers and debtor notes were seized as case exhibits. The man is believed to be involved in at least 6 separate cases of loanshark harassment in Bukit Batok and Woodlands housing estates.
 
The man will be charged in court on 29 December 2018 under the Moneylenders Act (2010 Revised Edition). Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
 
The Police takes a zero tolerance approach towards loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, and cause annoyance and disruption to public safety will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
 
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist the loansharks in any way. The public may call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect, or know of anyone who could be involved in illegal loansharking activities.
