The Police have arrested four women, aged between 26 and 28, for their suspected involvement in selling counterfeit luxury goods and apparel online.
In two separate operations conducted on 13 and 14 March 2019, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department conducted raids in the vicinity of Kaki Bukit and Serangoon, resulting in the arrest of the four women. A total of 1,465 pieces of trademark-infringing goods such as t-shirts, pants, caps, dresses, floor mats and handbags with an estimated street value of about $30,000, were seized. Preliminary investigations revealed that the women had procured these counterfeit goods from foreign sources, before reselling them locally via various online platforms.
Investigations are ongoing.
The Police take a serious view of intellectual property right infringements. Distribution and sale of counterfeit goods are serious offences and the Police will not hesitate to take tough action against perpetrators who profit at the expense of legitimate business and consumers. With the growth of e-commerce platforms, members of the public are advised to be careful of counterfeit products being sold on such platforms.
Anyone found guilty of selling or distributing goods with falsely applied trademarks may be fined up to a maximum of $100,000, or an imprisonment term which may extend to five years, or both.
