The Police have arrested a 50-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman for their suspected involvement in a series of scams involving fraudulent subscription of mobile lines.
Between 1 October 2018 and 24 March 2019, the Police received several reports from victims who were purportedly cheated by a duo into signing up for a mobile plan. The duo offered payment in exchange for their mobile phones. The victims were also promised that their mobile phone bills would be paid by the duo, however this was not the case.
Through follow up investigations and ground enquiries, officers from the Tanglin Police Division established the identities of the duo and arrested them on 31 March 2019. Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo is believed to be involved in other similar cases island wide.
The duo will be charged in court on 2 April 2019 with cheating with common intention under Section 420 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 which is punishable with an imprisonment term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to a fine.
