The Police have arrested a 32-year-old man for his suspected involvement in series of fraudulent credit cards purchases.
On 27 December 2018, the Police received a report from a local credit card terminal company that between 23 October 2018 to 6 December 2018, they received several chargebacks requests from banks relating to unauthorised transactions made via different credit cards.
Through follow-up investigations, officers from Tanglin Police Division established the identity of the man and subsequently arrested him on 8 April 2019. Two desktops and several other electronic devices were seized.
The man will be charged in the court on 10 April 2019 with unauthorised access to computer material under Section 3(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybersecurity Act, Chapter 50A. If convicted, the man faces a fine not exceeding $5000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years or to both.
The Police would like to advise all credit / debit card holders to adopt the following measures to prevent unauthorised use of their cards:
- Opt for SMS OTP verification for purchases or charges to your credit / debit cards.
- Opt for an SMS to be sent to your handphone for any charges incurred on your credit / debit card.
- Always log out, clear the browsing history and cache memory of the computer should the user access a public computer terminal;
- Check the bank statements and alert the bank immediately should there be any discrepancies or fraudulent charges.
- Do not give out credit / debit card details to unknown persons.
