The Police have arrested a 27-year-old woman for her suspected involvement in using a stolen credit card to make unauthorised retail purchases.
On 9 April 2019, the Police received a report from a victim who discovered unauthorised retail purchases were made via his credit card. Through ground enquiries, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established the identity of the woman and subsequently arrested her on 10 April 2019. Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman is believed to have stolen the credit cards and made at least three unauthorised credit card transactions amounting to more than $8,000/-. Three credit cards were seized as case exhibits.
The woman will be charged in court on 12 April 2019 with the offences of cheating and theft in dwelling under Section 420 and 380 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, respectively. Anyone who is convicted of cheating shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to fine. Anyone who is convicted of theft in dwelling shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 7 years, and shall also be liable to fine.
The Police would also like to remind merchants and sales staff to exercise vigilance and adopt correct card acceptance procedures when processing credit card transactions, particularly during the busy shopping season. They should look out for the various security features on the card face. If they are suspicious, they should contact their processing bank immediately for advice.
