The Police have arrested two teenagers aged 15 and 17 for their suspected involvement in loansharking activities.
On 27 April 2019, the Police received a report on loanshark harassment whereby a residential unit at Woodlands Street 32 was locked up with a bicycle lock and sprayed with red paint. Loanshark-related graffiti were also found scrawled on the wall beside the said unit. With the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the teenagers and arrested them at Marsiling Drive on the same day. A mobile phone, a spray paint can and a marker pen were seized as case exhibits.
The 17-year-old man will be charged in court on 29 April 2019 under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010) while the 15-year-old will be assisting police in investigations. Under the Moneylenders Act (Revised Edition 2010), first time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
