In a ceremony held at Ang Mo Kio Police Division on 5 August 2019, five members of the public were commended for their public spiritedness in assisting assisting the Police in five separate cases.
In the first case on 31 March 2019, Mr Lim Tsian Aun called the Police after spotting a man behaving suspiciously. Officers responded to the call and conducted checks on the man who turned violent. Mr Lim courageously went forward and rendered his assistance to apprehend the man. The man was subsequently arrested for drug-related offences.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division have been engaging stakeholders to train and educate their staff on scams and how they can help prevent them. In two separate occasions, on 28 May 2019 and 4 July 2019, two staff from two convenience shops were able to prevent their customers from being scammed. Both noticed that their customers behaved abnormally while trying to purchase cards. They promptly stopped their customers from making payment and shared that they may have been a victim of scam. Both staff called for the police and prevented their customers from being scammed of $1450 and $800 respectively.
In the fourth case, on 2 July 2019, Mr Muhammad Afiq Bin Mohamed Kamal spotted a motorcycle that resembled one which had been stolen and called the police. He was able to recognise the stolen motorcycle as the owner had posted a photo on Facebook. Officers responded to the call and subsequently arrested two men who were suspected to be involved in theft of motor vehicle.
In the last case, on 10 July 2019, Ms Mariani Salim was approached by her employee for assistance. Her employee claimed that her relatives wanted to send her gifts and asked if she could direct the gifts to Ms Mariani as she was unable to do so at her current place of stay. After meeting her employee and obtaining more details, the employee admitted that the supposed gifts were to be sent by a man she had met online but not in real life. Ms Mariani advised her employee that this was likely a scam and prevented any transactions from taking place.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Zhang Weihan, Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, said: “Today we are pleased to present these awards to the five individuals for their public-spirited interventions in rendering assistance to police officers and members of the public who were in need. SPF’s vision is to make Singapore the safest country in the world, and the people we serve have also stepped up to share this common goal with us. These friends of SPF have demonstrated that you can fight crime in your daily life – Mr Lim and Mr Afiq were vigilant in protecting their neighbourhoods, and staff of retail stores stopped crime by being vigilant on their jobs. Together, we can build a safer and more secure home for all of us.”
