The Police are investigating a 24-year-old man who is believed to have lodged a false report.

On 19 September 2019 at about 9.50am, the Police received a report that a van belonging to a company had been stolen from a car park along Jurong West Street 52.

The man reported that the van was last seen at the said car park the previous night. During the course of investigations, officers from Jurong Police Division detected several inconsistencies in the man’s account. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had allowed a friend to use the van, and had provided false information to the Police by claiming that the van was stolen so as to account to his company regarding the missing vehicle.

Investigations against the man are ongoing. Anyone convicted for giving any information which he or she knows to be false to a public servant shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with a fine which may extend to $5000, or with both.

The Police would like to remind members of the public that police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
