In a ceremony held at Tanglin Police Division on 20 October 2019, eight members of the public were commended for their public spiritedness.
In the first case on 17 June 2019, Mr Foong Sheng Hui, Ms Tay Xiu Wen and Mr Chua Ming Huat had assisted the Police in preventing a man from committing suicide. Mr Foong and Ms Tay, who were on their way home, noticed the man standing on the ledge of an overhead bridge along Toa Payoh East. Mr Foong and Ms Tay approached the man and tried to keep him calm while waiting for the Police to arrive. Mr Foong and Ms Tay eventually brought the man to safety with Mr Chua’s assistance.
In the second case on 7 July 2019, Ms Pascual Nancy Balino and Ms Ronavel Daguro Arellano had assisted the Police in detaining a man, who tried to flee after he peeped into a toilet cubicle occupied by a woman at Toa Payoh HDB Hub.
In the third case on 23 August 2019, Mr Darren Low Jia Meng and Mr Ling Zhijie had assisted the Police in preventing a teenager from committing suicide. With the assistance from Mr Ling, Mr Low eventually brought the teenager to safety when she ran towards the railing of a multi-storey carpark along Toa Payoh North.
In the last case on 31 August 2019, Ms Betty Juliana Tan had assisted the Police in finding a young boy who had been reported missing. Worried for his safety, Ms Tan called for the Police when the boy ran away from her when she tried to approach him. The boy was safely handed over to his family by the Police.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Chong Zunjie, Commander of Tanglin Police Division said, “These outstanding individuals have selflessly assisted the police to protect lives and prevent crime. They have demonstrated commendable acts of valour and public-spiritedness. Public-spirited individuals like our eight award recipients help make our communities safer and more secure.
Police officers cannot be everywhere at the same time. It is only with the strong support of the community can the Singapore Police Force achieve our mission to prevent, deter and detect crime.”
