In a ceremony held at National Heart Centre by Central Police Division on 9 January 2020, seven members of the public were commended for their public-spiritedness in two separate cases, and 56 organisations were commended for their contributions and strong partnership with the Police in the fight against crime. Letters of appreciation were also presented to the Chairpersons of the Safety & Security Watch Groups (SSWGs) working with Central Police Division.

Members of the public commended for Public Spiritedness Award

In the first case, on 14 December 2019 at about 5.40pm, four employees from Sephora at Bugis Plus, Ms Cecille Kristine Carrillo, Ms Berry Diow Shin Huey, Ms Zunika Bte Jamari and Mr Muhammad Izwan Fikry Bin Isnawan called the Police and confronted a man for taking an upskirt video of a female victim. The man was detained with the help of security officers and was subsequently arrested for insulting the modesty of women and causing public nuisance.

In the second case, on 30 December 2019 at about 6.00pm, Ms Tan Suyun, Ms Tan Sujun and Mr Trevor Sze Chun Chie had provided critical and timely information about the commission of a crime, and the whereabouts of the male suspect, which led to his arrest. Ms Suyun saw a man meddling with the lock of a van at 814 Jellicoe Road and she took a video of it. While confronting the man, Mr Trevor and Ms Sujun went forward to assist Ms Suyun, and the three of them then called the Police. During the confrontation, Mr Trevor was punched by the man. The man was subsequently arrested for attempted theft from vehicle and voluntarily causing hurt.

Organisations commended for Community Partnership Awards

A total of 56 organisations, who are members of the SSWGs were presented with the Community Partnership Awards (CPAs). The CPA is given to organisations to recognise their contributions and strong partnership with the Police in the fight against crime. Recipients include the main branch of Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Limited (OCBC), which helped to foil a case of scam amounting to almost $28,000.

that Central Police Division has been able to organise various table-top exercises, and actual ground exercises to strengthen readiness for contingencies, and implement strong crime prevention initiatives in these buildings. The SSWGs were introduced as a platform for the commercial sector to collaborate on target hardening of their premises. It is through the strong leadership of the Chairpersons and responsible building management of the members of the SSWGs

Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Police Gregory Tan Siew Hin, Commander of Central Police Division said, “The Police cannot fight crime and terrorism alone and we are grateful to have such strong support from the larger communities, whether individuals, or organisations from the private, people and public sectors. We are proud to acknowledge the proactiveness and dedication to safety and security shown by these 56 organisations, and especially the five chairpersons of the SSWGs. They deserve the recognition for taking a keen interest in ensuring that their staff, customers and the public are safe and secure, even if it means incurring some time and financial or other costs. In addition, these seven members of the public stepped forward and courageously assisted the SPF to nab culprits for two separate cases. Because of their quick thinking, the culprits were apprehended swiftly, preventing further offences.  These individuals’ selfless acts are a good example for others and a testament to the strong sense of partnership between the Police and the community.”
