The Police have arrested a 43-year-old man for his suspected involvement in loanshark harassment activities.
On 3 February 2020, the Police received a report of loanshark harassment along 3 Woodlands Drive where the door of a residential unit was splashed with red paint. A debtor’s note was also found affixed on the wall outside the unit. Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him along Canberra Crescent on 3 February 2020. The man is suspected to be involved in a similar case reported along Fulton Road. In connection to the cases, the Police have seized personal apparels and a mobile phone found in the man’s possession.
The man will be charged in court on 5 February 2020 under the Moneylenders Act, Chapter 188 (Revised Edition 2010). First time offenders found guilty of loanshark harassment shall be fined not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with mandatory imprisonment of up to 5 years, and mandatory caning of up to 6 strokes.
The Police take a zero tolerance approach towards loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, and cause annoyance and disruptions to public safety will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
