Through extensive investigations and with the aid of images from CCTV and police cameras, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man on 23 April 2020. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man is believed to be involved in two other cases involving offensive tweets. Police investigations are ongoing.
The offence of promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of race under Section 298A of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, carries an imprisonment term of up to three years, or a fine, or both.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Julius Lim, Commander of Bedok Police Division, said, “At a time when we need the nation stand as one, acts that sow racial discord cannot be condoned. Thanks to the relentless work by the investigators from Bedok Police Division, we were able to identify the person responsible for the offensive content on Twitter and bring him to justice. We will continue to take a tough stand against those who seek to stoke community tensions in multi-racial Singapore.”
