The Police have arrested eight drivers, aged between 20 and 42, for their suspected involvement in a case of dangerous driving and illegal racing along Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE).

On 16 May 2020 at 1.32am, the Police were alerted to an illegal race involving multiple vehicles along KPE. Following investigations and with the aid of images from CCTV footages, officers from the Traffic Police established the identities of the people involved and arrested six men and two women during a series of operations between 19 and 22 May 2020.

Investigations are ongoing. The Police are also investigating them for breach of safe distancing measures under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.

Under Section 116(7) of the Road Traffic Act, the offence for motorists who promote or take part in any competition or trial of speed carries an imprisonment term of up to 6 months and a fine of between $1,000 and $2,000. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 12 months and with a fine of between $2,000 and $3,000. Motorists involved in this offence may also be liable for forfeiture of their vehicles under Section 117(1) of the Road Traffic Act and may have their driving licence disqualified.

Under Section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act, the offence for dangerous driving carries an imprisonment term of up to 12 months, and a fine of up to $5,000, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 2 years, and a fine of up to $10,000, or both.

Illegal racing is a highly dangerous and irresponsible act that could result in serious or fatal traffic accidents. The Traffic Police takes a stern view on such dangerous road behaviour that puts the lives of other road users at risk, and will continue to take tough enforcement action against errant motorists who choose to flout traffic rules.
