The Police have arrested six men, aged between 48 and 74, during an enforcement operation targeting illegal gambling activities conducted by Woodlands Police Division along Woodlands Street 32 and Marsiling Road on 24 May 2020.
The six men were suspected to be involved in illegal bookmaking and illegal betting. They were arrested for offences under the Betting Act. Cash amounting to more than $800 and some gambling paraphernalia were seized during the operation.
Investigations are ongoing. Police are also investigating the six arrested for breaching safe distancing measures under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.
Under the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable on conviction to a fine up to $5,000, or to imprisonment for a term up to six months, or both. Any person who is found to be involved in bookmaking shall be liable on conviction to a fine of between $20,000 and $200,000, and shall also be punished with imprisonment for a term up to five years.
The Police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities, including illegal gambling. Those found engaging in such activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law. Members of the public are also advised to take the circuit breaker measures seriously.
