The Police have arrested a 21-year-old female driver for her alleged involvement in a case of dangerous driving, driving under disqualification and driving without the owner’s consent.
On 28 May 2020 at about 5:05pm, a Traffic Police (TP) officer spotted the female driver suddenly cutting across lane 1 to lane 3 along Tampines Expressway, and then cutting across the chevron markings to turn into Jalan Kayu road, which caused another driver to apply the emergency brake to avoid a collision. When the TP officer signalled the female driver to pull over to the side of the road, she sped off instead. During the pursuit, she went on to commit several serious traffic violations, including driving recklessly against the flow of traffic and almost colliding with oncoming vehicles a few times.
The female driver was eventually stopped by the TP officer at the slip road of Sengkang West Avenue leading into Fernvale Road. As the TP officer was walking towards the driver’s side of the car, she started to rev the car engine. For his personal safety, the TP officer quickly jumped over the car’s bonnet to land on the other side of the car to avoid being hit, in case the car surged towards him. Though initially uncooperative, she eventually exited the car and cooperated with the TP officer.
The 21-year-old female driver was arrested for dangerous driving, driving under disqualification and driving without the owner’s consent. The Traffic Police has also impounded the car. No one was injured during the incident. Police investigations are ongoing.
Under Section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act, the offence of dangerous driving carries an imprisonment term of up to 12 months, and a fine of up to $5,000, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 2 years, and a fine of up to $10,000, or both. Under Section 43(4) of the Road Traffic Act, the offence of driving under disqualification carries an imprisonment term of up to 3 years, and a fine of up to $10,000, or both.
In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, the offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 6 years, and a fine of up to $20,000, or both. The motor vehicle used may also be seized and forfeited. Under Section 96(1) of the Road Traffic Act, the offence of taking a motor vehicle without owner’s consent carries an imprisonment up to 3 months, and a fine of up to $1,000, or both.
