Man Convicted Of Cheating Subsidies Under The Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS)

On 3 June 2020, a 36-year-old Teo Eu Gene (“Teo”), a former dentist with Phoenix Dental Surgery, was convicted on 25 counts of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. He was sentenced to 46 weeks’ imprisonment on 3 June 2020.

Between 4 August 2014 and 19 October 2015, Teo had submitted 25 CHAS claims which included dental procedures he had not performed on his patients. The total disbursement for these claims was $31,583, of which $18,618.50 was for fictitious procedures.

Five other similar cheating charges were taken into consideration for the purposes of his sentencing. Another 30 charges for falsification of accounts under Section 477A of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 were also taken into consideration for sentencing.  The charges under Section 477A of the Penal Code were in connection to patients’ medical case notes which were falsified to support Teo’s claims.

The court proceeding against one other accused person involved in the case is ongoing.
