Duo Investigated For Uttering Racial Slurs And Vulgarities On Social Media

The Police are investigating a 19-year-old Singaporean Malay man and his 53-year-old mother, a Singaporean Malay, for their suspected involvement in uttering racial slurs and vulgarities on social media with deliberate intent to wound the racial feelings of others.

Between 3 and 5 June 2020, the Police received several reports against both of them for uttering racial slurs and vulgarities during a live Instagram session on 3 June 2020. They had allegedly done so in response to viewers’ comments about a video he had made in 2016 and re-posted on his social media account, in which he had used a racial slur.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The offence of uttering words with deliberate intent to wound the racial or religious feelings of any person under Section 298 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term of up to three years, or a fine, or both.

The Police treat acts that can threaten racial or religious harmony in Singapore very seriously. Any person who makes remarks that can cause ill-will and hostility between the different races and religions will be dealt with swiftly and firmly.
