The Police have arrested a 52-year-old man for public nuisance and voluntarily causing hurt.

On 7 June 2020, the Police were alerted to a case where the 52-year-old man had allegedly slapped another man several times on his face at the open space parking area near NEX shopping mall the day before at about 5pm.

Through enquiries and follow-up investigations, officers from Jurong Police Division established the identity of the suspect and arrested him on 10 June 2020. Investigations are ongoing.

The offence of public nuisance under Section 290 of the Penal Code carries a fine of up to $2,000. If the act is deemed to be able to cause, with reasonable probability, any common injury, danger or annoyance to the public, or to the people in general who dwell or occupy property in the vicinity, the offence will carry an imprisonment term of up to three months, or a fine of up to $2,000, or both. The offence of voluntary causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term of up to 3 years, or with fine of up to $5,000 or both.

The Police takes a serious view of such egregious behaviour, and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
