A 53-year-old Singaporean man will be charged in court on 20 June 2020 for allegedly voluntarily causing hurt to a National Environmental Agency (NEA) enforcement officer.

On 6 June 2020, the Police received a call for assistance regarding an altercation between two NEA enforcement officers and a man at Tampines Central. Preliminary investigations revealed that the two NEA enforcement officers had witnessed the man littering and asked for his particulars. The man allegedly refused to cooperate, turned aggressive and verbally abused the officers. He also allegedly punched and kicked one of the officers, and later threw a bicycle towards them.

The man will be charged with voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty punishable under Section 332 of the Penal Code and rash act which endangers life or the personal safety of others punishable under Section 336(a) of the Penal Code. The man is also being investigated for using abusive language against a public servant punishable under Section 6(3) of the Protection from Harassment Act.

The offence of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty under Section 332 of the Penal Code carries an imprisonment term of up to 7 years, a fine or caning, or both. The offence of rash act which endangers life or the personal safety of others under Section 336(a) of the Penal Code, carries an imprisonment term of up to 6 months, a fine which may extend to $2,500, or both. The offence of using abusive language against a public servant under Section 6(3) of the Protection from Harassment Act carries an imprisonment term of up to 12 months, a fine not exceeding $5,000, or both.
