14 men, aged between 19 and 59, will be charged in court on 26 June 2020 for not complying with safe distancing measures (SDM) under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.
The cases are as follows:
- On 11 April 2020, a 59-year-old man drank and ate with his friend at the void deck of Block 511 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 and received a conditional warning for participating in a social gathering during the Circuit-Breaker period. Despite this, the man continued to be involved in more social gatherings with his friends on three other occasions between 15 April and 13 May 2020. For engaging in social gatherings with his friends on four separate occasions between 11 April and 13 May 2020, the man will be charged for violating the prohibition on social gatherings under regulation 6 of the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020. The man will also be charged for not wearing his mask and not keeping a distance of at least one metre from his friends on 13 May 2020 under regulation 3A(1)(a) and regulation 7(1) of the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020 respectively. His friends are being dealt with separately for breaching the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.
- On 30 April 2020, a 54-year-old man left his place of residence without a valid reason and chatted with a friend at the void deck of Block 202 Tampines Street 21. For this, he will be charged for violating the prohibition on social gatherings under regulation 6 of the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020. The man’s friend was issued with a Notice of Composition (NOC) for breaching SDM for the first time. Prior to this incident, the man had been issued notices of composition for leaving his place of residence without valid reason by Enforcement Officers (“EOs”) on two other occasions and he was uncooperative despite repeated warnings from the EOs on both occasions. As he did not make payment for the notices of composition, he will also be charged for violating restrictions on leaving his place of residence under regulation 4(2) of the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.
- On 11 June 2020, six men residing at a residential unit along Havelock Road had invited six other men to their residence for a social gathering. Eight of them, comprising two residents and the six men, then went to the playground in the vicinity to smoke and chat. The six men who visited the unit will be charged for violating restrictions on leaving their place of residence without a valid reason and for violating the prohibition on social gatherings under regulation 4(2) and regulation 6(1) of the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020 respectively. The six residents will be charged for violating restrictions on permitting other individuals to enter their ordinary place of residence without a valid reason under Regulation 4(4) of the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020. For gathering with the six men at the playground, the two residents who participated in the social gathering at the playground will also be charged for violating the prohibition on social gatherings under regulation 6(1) of the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.
The authorities will not hesitate to take action against anyone who does not comply with SDM or show blatant disregard for our laws. Let us all do our part to curb the spread of COVID-19.
