Man To Be Charged For Knowingly Committing Acts Prejudicial To The Maintenance Of Racial Harmony

A 34-year-old Singaporean Malay man will be charged in court on 2 July 2020 for his suspected involvement in knowingly committing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of racial harmony.

On 18 April 2020, the Police received a report relating to offensive content against Indian migrant workers posted by a Twitter handle (@sharonliew86).

Officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity of the man on 23 April 2020. Further investigations revealed that the man is also allegedly involved in two other cases involving other purportedly offensive tweets.

The man will be charged in court on 2 July 2020 for knowingly committing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of racial harmony under Section 298A of the Penal Code. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to three years, or a fine, or both.

The Police will not condone acts that threaten racial and religious harmony in Singapore. Any person who makes remarks that can cause ill-will and hostility between the different races and religions will be dealt with swiftly and firmly.
