The police have arrested two women, aged 33 and 38, for their suspected involvement in selling counterfeit goods on a social media platform.
On 15 July 2020, officers from the Criminal Investigation Department conducted a raid in the vicinity of Ang Mo Kio Street 64, resulting in the arrests. During the operation, more than 3,000 pieces of trademark-infringing goods comprising handbags, apparel, watches and accessories with an estimated street value of more than S$72,000 were seized.
Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the women had procured these counterfeit goods from overseas and offered them for sale on a social media platform. Investigations are ongoing.
The police take a serious view of intellectual property rights infringements. Distribution and sale of counterfeit goods are serious offences and the police will not hesitate to take tough action against perpetrators who profit at the expense of legitimate businesses and consumers.
Anyone found guilty of selling or distributing goods with falsely applied trademarks may be fined up to a maximum of $100,000, face an imprisonment term of up to five years, or both.
