The police have arrested a 38-year-old man for his suspected involvement in using stolen credit card information to make unauthorised transactions.
On 3 and 19 May 2020, the police received two reports from two victims who discovered that several unauthorised online transactions had been made with their credit cards between January 2019 and April 2020.
Through investigations, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established that the man had allegedly obtained the credit card information of both victims from an unknown person and used the information to make unauthorised transactions amounting to more than $1,270. The man was arrested on 20 July 2020. A router, two mobile phones and a stored value card card were seized as case exhibits.
The man will be charged in court on 22 July 2020 with unauthorised access to computer materials under Section 3(1) of the Computer Misuse Act. The offence carries a fine of up to $5,000, a jail term of up to 2 years, or both.
The police would like to remind members of the public that unauthorised use of another person’s credit or debit card is a serious offence. Members of the public are advised to adopt the following crime prevention measures:
Do’s
- Keep your credit or debit cards safe with you at all times;
- Inform the card-issuing bank immediately when you discover the loss of your credit or debit cards;
- Opt in for SMS notifications to be sent to your mobile phone for any charges incurred on your credit or debit cards; and
- Check your bank statements and alert the bank immediately should there be any discrepancies or unauthorised charges.
Don’t's
- Give out your credit or debit card details to unknown persons;
- Reveal your OTPs to anyone; and
- Expose your credit or debit cards. Keep them in your purse or wallet until you are ready to make your purchase.
