The Police have arrested two men, aged 35 and 49, for their suspected involvement in a case of extortion with common intention.

On 7 December 2020 at about 12.55pm, the Police received a reported lodged by a male victim informing that an unknown man had purportedly demanded $10,000 from him on 1 December 2020. The latter allegedly threatened to circulate the victim’s compromising photographs if the victim did not transfer the money to the man. The victim subsequently transferred $5,000 to the man’s bank account. When the man purportedly demanded that the victim pay him the balance sum of $5,000, the victim decided to lodge a Police report.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the 35-year-old man had posed as a woman to lure the victim to send him compromising photos. The 49-year-old man was also allegedly involved in the case. Through ground enquiries, officers from the Jurong Police Division managed to establish the identities of both men and arrested them on 8 December.

Both men will be charged in court on 10 December 2020 with extortion under Section 384 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence of extortion carries an imprisonment term of not less than two years and not more than seven years, and caning.
