The Police are investigating 11 women and five men, aged between 31 and 80, for their suspected involvement in illegal gambling.
On 9 December 2020 at about 3.00 pm, officers from Clementi Police Division conducted an operation at a unit along Jurong East Street 32. A 31-yearold man and a 36-year-old woman was arrested for their suspected involvement in operating a common gaming house. The remaining 14 persons are being investigated for allegedly gaming in a common gaming house. Cash and other gambling-related paraphernalia were seized as case exhibits.
The 16 persons will also be investigated for breaching safe distancing measures under the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulations 2020.
The offence of managing a place to be used as a common gaming house under Section 4(1)(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act carries a fine of not less than $5,000, and not more than $50,000, and an imprisonment term not exceeding three years. The offence of gaming in a common gaming house under Section 7 of the Common Gaming Houses Act carries a fine not exceeding $5,000, or an imprisonment term not exceeding six months, or both.
The Police will continue to clamp down on criminal activities, including illegal gambling. Those found engaging in illicit activities will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
