Ten Presented With Public Spiritedness Award At Bedok Police Division

In a ceremony held at Bedok Police Division on 20 January 2021, four members of the public and six Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officers were commended for their public spiritedness.

In the first case, on 18 March 2020, Mr Pu ZongHan had assisted the Police in the arrest of a teenager for a case of theft at Eunos MRT station. Mr Pu heard a call for help and saw a teenager running out of a convenience store located in the vicinity of the said location. He proceeded to give chase and managed to detain the teenager and subsequently handed him over to the Police officers.

In the second case, on 31 March 2020, SCDF officers, First Warrant Officer (WO1) Ngui Hook Siong, Third Sergeant (SGT3) Muhd Khalid Bin Abdulah Sani, Third Sergeant (SGT3) Muhammad Shafi’i Bin Rahmat, Second Warrant Officer (WO2) Sulaiman Bin Ahmad, Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Sharul’izam Bin Oshman and Staff Sergeant (SSGT) Zamri Bin Amran, had assisted the Police in the arrest of a man for a case of outrage of modesty. The Police had received a report that a female victim was molested by a man onboard a bus. While the bus was stopped along Mountbatten Road to wait for Police’s arrival, the man attempted to flee from the bus. The SCDF officers were having their training run when they saw a commotion coming from the bus and noticed a man running away. They immediately chased after the man and managed to detain him until Police’s arrival.

In the third case, on 10 July 2020, Mr Joe (not his real name) had assisted the Police in the arrest of a man for a case of voyeurism at Bedok Mall. Mr Joe was waiting for his girlfriend outside the fitting room of a store when he heard a female voice from one the cubicles shouting repeatedly ‘Who’s that using the phone? Someone is recording me!’. Subsequently, the female victim came out and approached Mr Joe to check if he had seen anyone running out. Sensing that the suspect was still inside one of the cubicles, he waited with the victim for the suspect to come out. When a man behaved suspiciously while walking out of a cubicle, Mr Joe engaged the man while the store assistant called the Police. The man was subsequently handed over to Police officers.

In the last case, on 15 September 2020, Mr Muhammad Mu’tasim Bin Kassim and Mr Clement Tan had assisted the Police in the arrest of a man for a case of voluntarily causing hurt and possession of offensive weapon at Pasir Ris Drive 1. The two men were at a bus stop along the said location when they heard a commotion coming from a bus which was stopped there. As they approached the bus, they saw a man throwing punches at the bus captain onboard the bus. They rushed in immediately to bring the man out of the bus and subdued him. While restraining the man, they discovered that he had a knife on him which they quickly removed. The man was subsequently handed over to Police officers.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Julius Lim, Commander of Bedok Police Division said: “The recipients of the Public Spiritedness Award exemplify the sense of community responsibility that is required of all of us during these difficult times. From standing up to violent bullies, to chasing down sex offenders, these individuals had put their safety on the line to uphold the rule of law. Bedok Police Division is proud to count them as our partners and hope their examples will inspire others to step forward to keep our neighbourhoods safe.”
