Man Investigated For Providing False Information To A Public Servant

The Police are investigating a 60-year-old man for allegedly providing false information to a public servant.

On 16 May 2021 at about 6.00pm, the Police were alerted to a case of impersonation of public servants and theft. The man purportedly informed police officers that two unknown men had approached him and identified themselves as police officers. He allegedly claimed that the two unknown men had seized cash amounting to $5,000 and a handphone belonging to the man as they said that these were proceeds of crime related to illegal bookmaking.

During the course of investigations, officers from Tanglin Police Division detected several inconsistencies between the man’s account and the CCTV footages that were obtained by the officers. Investigations revealed that the man had provided false information to the police and was not a victim of the reported crime.

Police investigations against the man are ongoing. The offence of giving any information which a person knows to be false to a public servant carries an imprisonment term which may extend to 2 years, a fine, or both.

The Police would like to remind members of the public that police resources can be put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating into false reports or false information. Those who lodge false police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.
