The Police are investigating 15 men and one woman, aged between 61 and 80, for their suspected involvement in illegal horse betting activities.
Between 4 August 2021 and 8 August 2021, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division conducted enforcement operations along Serangoon Avenue 3. Three men and a woman, aged between 68 and 80, were arrested for their suspected involvement as bookmakers while 12 men, aged between 61 and 80, are being investigated for betting with bookmakers. Cash amounting to more than $18,200, five mobile phones and betting paraphernalia were seized. Investigations against all 16 persons are ongoing.
Under Section 5(1) of the Betting Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both. Under Section 5(3) of the Betting Act, any person who acts as a bookmaker or for the purpose of bookmaking or settling bets shall be liable on conviction to a fine not less than $20,000 and not more than $200,000, and imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years.
The Police take a serious view against all forms of illegal betting activities. The Police will continue to take tough enforcement actions and prosecute those involved in accordance with the law. Members of the public are advised to steer clear of all forms of illegal gambling activities.
