Twelve Persons Under Investigation For Illegal Gambling Activities

The Police are investigating 11 men and one woman aged between 34 and 80, for their suspected involvement in illegal gambling activities.

Between 26 February and 9 March 2022, officers from Woodlands Police Division conducted enforcement operations against illegal gambling activities along Marsiling Road, Marsiling Crescent and Woodlands Street 32. Three men, aged between 34 and 65, were allegedly found to have acted as bookmakers to seven others, aged between 54 and 72. A 71-year-old woman was allegedly found to have bought a ticket from an 80-year-old man, who had purportedly assisted in carrying on a public lottery. In addition, two of the three bookmakers are also being investigated for an alleged offence under the Remote Gambling Act 2014. Cash amounting to more than $470, mobile phones and gambling-related paraphernalia were seized.

Under the Common Gaming House Act 1961, any person assisting in carrying a public lottery shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine between $20,000 and $200,000, and with imprisonment for a term up to five years.

Under the Betting Act 1960, any person who is found to be involved in bookmaking shall be liable on conviction to a fine between $20,000 and $200,000, and with imprisonment for a term up to five years. Under the same Act, any person who bets with a bookmaker shall be liable on conviction to a fine up to $5,000, imprisonment for a term up to six months, or both.

Under the Remote Gambling Act 2014, any person involved in unlawful remote gambling shall be liable on conviction to a fine up to $5,000, imprisonment for a term up to six months, or both.

The Police take a serious view against all forms of illegal gambling activities and will continue to take tough enforcement action against offenders in accordance with the law. Members of the public are advised to steer clear of such activities.
