The Singapore Police Force (SPF) held the Police Day Parade 2022 on 3 June 2022 after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The parade, presided over by President Halimah Yacob, was attended by more than 2000 police officers who wore the newly inaugurated Singapore Police Bicentennial Medal for the first time.
Police Day has been commemorated annually on 3 June since the first parade in 1971. Police Day celebrates the SPF’s achievements, recognises the contributions of past and present officers, and brings officers together to renew our pledge to serve Singapore and to carry out our duties with courage, loyalty, integrity, and fairness.
Significance of Police Day
3 June 1959 is a date of special significance, as it marks the day that Singapore obtained self-government and the day the SPF first became accountable to the people of Singapore as the law enforcement agency of an elected Government. In 1971, Professor Wong Lin Ken, then Minister for Home Affairs, announced the designation of 3 June as Police Day. In his speech at the opening of “Police Week” on 3 June 1971, he said, “The Government has designated 3rd of June to be Police Day, to reaffirm the fact that the Police is a part of our society, responsible to an elected government, and the maintenance of law and order is a service to the community.”
The Singapore Police Bicentennial 2020 Medal and Medallion
The Singapore Police Bicentennial 2020 Medal and Medallion were inaugurated during the Police Day Parade.
The design of the medal incorporates features associated with the SPF’s identity. The obverse of the medal consists of a multi-lobed disc with layers of eight-pointed stars to represent continuity. The centre of the medal bears the Singapore State Crest. The medal suspender incorporates a pair of laurels, a symbol of excellence, as well as the numeral 200 to honour 200 years of policing in Singapore.
The reverse of the medal bears the inscription "Police Bicentennial 2020", the SPF Crest and the SPF200 logo. The infinity symbol was integrated into the SPF200 logo to signify the SPF's commitment and continuous role in safeguarding Singapore, for the past 200 years and beyond.
The ribbon consists of three distinctive colours of the SPF – blue, red and white. The significance of the colours is as follows:
- Blue is associated with police forces around the world.
- Red is derived from our Singapore flag. It represents universal brotherhood and equality.
- White symbolises virtue and integrity.
