The Police have arrested a 21-year-old man on 13 September 2022 for possession of a scheduled weapon and carrying a truncheon in a public place.
On 13 September 2022 at about 2pm, the Police were conducting foot patrol along Cheng Yan Place when a 21-year-old man tried to evade the officers when he realised that they were looking to conduct a check on him. The man had refused to comply with the officers’ instructions to stop and ran away. The officers gave chase and subsequently apprehended him along Bencoolen Street.
During the chase, the man had purportedly taken out a retractable baton measuring about 50cm. The man was initially non-compliant even when chased, but dropped his baton when an officer drew his Taser. Necessary force was used to subdue him. A concealed knuckle-duster was also purportedly found in his underwear. Both the baton and knuckle-duster were seized as case exhibit.
The man was arrested for the alleged offences of possession of a scheduled weapon, carrying a truncheon in a public place and suspected drug-related offences. No one was injured during the incident.
The man will be charged in court on 15 September 2022 with possession of a scheduled weapon under Section 7(1)(a) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 and carrying a truncheon in a public place under Section 22A (1) of the Miscellaneous Offences (Public Order and Nuisance) Act 1906. The offence for possession of a scheduled weapon carries an imprisonment term not exceeding five years and caning of not less than six strokes. The offence of carrying a truncheon in a public place carries an imprisonment term not exceeding one month, a fine not exceeding $5,000, or both.
The Police have zero tolerance towards brazen acts which threaten the safety of members of the public and will not hesitate to take action against those who blatantly disregard the law.
