Strong Cooperation With Royal Malaysia Police Leading To The Arrest Of A Male Malaysian Involved In A Syndicate Using Prohibited Recording Device In The Casino

The Police have arrested a 35-year-old Malaysian man belonging to a syndicate who was allegedly involved in a conspiracy to use a prohibited device to record cards dealt in the course of gaming of Baccarat at Marina Bay Sands Casino in Singapore.

With strong co-operation and assistance rendered by the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), the syndicate member was arrested in Malaysia on 3 February 2023, pursuant to a warrant of arrest issued by the State Courts in Singapore. The suspect was then handed over to the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on 5 February 2023.

The syndicate member will be charged in court on 6 February 2023 with the offence of engaging in a conspiracy to use things prohibited under Section 171(1) and punishable under Section 171(5) Casino Control Act 2006 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code 1871. Those convicted are liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding seven years, a fine not exceeding $150,000, or both.

The Malaysian man is believed to be linked to an earlier investigation by the Casino Crime Investigation Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department that commenced on 24 December 2022, which involved a suspected case of using a prohibited device to enable someone to record cards dealt, while gaming in the same casino. A 27-year-old Taiwanese man was charged in court on 26 December 2022 for his involvement as part of the syndicate. During investigation, Police also seized casino chips worth more than $700,000, a mobile phone and cash.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigations & Intelligence) concurrent Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, How Kwang Hwee expressed his appreciation to the RMP for their assistance in the arrest of the syndicate member. He said, “The arrest of this syndicate member is testament to the excellent relationship forged between the SPF and the RMP. We are appreciative of their assistance and will spare no effort to bring criminals who commit crimes in Singapore and flee our borders to justice.”
