The Police are investigating eight persons, aged between 28 and 80, for their suspected involvement in illegal betting activities.

On 1 February 2023, officers from Woodlands Police Division and the Health Sciences Authority (“HSA”) conducted joint operation along Marsiling Lane, Marsiling Drive and Yishun Ave 5. Three men, aged between 63 and 80, were purportedly found to have acted as gambling service providers to three persons, aged between 54 and 80. Another 28-year-old man and a 54-year-old woman were allegedly found gambling with an unlicensed gambling service provider. Cash amounting to about $6,200, six mobile phones and betting-related paraphernalia were seized as case exhibits. Police investigations against the eight persons are ongoing.

E-vaporisers and related components were also seized as case exhibits by HSA.The 28-year-old man is assisting in investigations for offences under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisement and Sale) Act. Those found guilty of selling, offering for sale, possessing for sale, importing or distributing e-vaporisers and its components, are liable to a fine not exceeding $10,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both for the first offence; and to a fine not exceeding $20,000, imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both, for the second or subsequent offence.  In addition, for possessing, using and purchasing such items, offenders are liable to a fine not exceeding $2,000.

Under the Gambling Control Act 2022, anyone who is found to be involved in unlawful betting operations shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not exceeding $200,000 and imprisonment for a term of up to five years. Under the same Act, any person who gambles with an unlawful gambling service provider shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $10,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or both.

The Police take a serious view of all forms of illegal gambling activities and will continue to take tough enforcement action, including prosecuting those involved, to the fullest extent of the law. Members of the public are advised to steer clear of all forms of illegal gambling activities.
