The Police have arrested two men, aged 24 and 25, and a 26-year-old woman for their suspected involvement in a series of cheating offences with at least 32 victims.
Since August 2023, the Police received several reports of job scams involving the use of a Buy-Now-Pay-Later (“BNPL”) service, where victims who responded to social media posts on “fast cash” were requested to register their Singpass with the BNPL service and hand over their account details. The victims’ accounts would then be used to make purchases at electronic stores, with the items subsequently collected for resale. The victims were then assured that the instalment plan would be paid, but were left with outstanding payments amounting to more than $76,000.
Through follow-up investigations, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identities of the trio and arrested them on 25 and 26 September 2023.
The 25-year-old man will be charged in court on 28 September 2023 with cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871, which carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.
Police investigations are ongoing against the woman and 24-year-old man.
The Police take a serious view against any person who may be involved in scams and frauds, and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
