The Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of housebreaking to commit theft, voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty and using of abusive language against a public servant within three hours.
On 3 November 2023 at about 11.05am, the Police received a report of housebreaking at a restaurant along Geylang Road. Cash amounting to $121 was purportedly stolen. The man had also allegedly kicked and punched a restaurant staff when escaping.
Through ground enquires and with the aid of CCTV footage, officers from Bedok Police Division and Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the man’s identity. When Police officers engaged the man, he allegedly hurled vulgarities, spat and punched one of the officers on his face.
The man was subsequently arrested. The 42-year-old officer was conveyed conscious to the hospital with minor injuries and was discharged on the same day.
The man will be charged in court on 4 November 2023 with the offence of housebreaking to commit theft under Section 451 of the Penal Code 1871 and voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty under Section 332 of the Penal Code 1871.
The offence of housebreaking to commit theft carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine. The offence of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, and a fine or caning. The offence of using abusive language against a public servant carries an imprisonment term of up to 12 months, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
The Police have zero tolerance towards such acts of violence towards police officers or public servants who are carrying out their duties. The Police will not hesitate to take firm action against those who endanger the safety of our officers.
