A 27-year-old man will be charged in court on 9 February 2024 for his involvement in a hit-and-run case which resulted in one fatality and another victim who was badly hurt.
On 6 February 2024 at about 1.20am, the Police were alerted to a hit-and-run accident involving a car and a motorcycle along BKE towards Woodlands. As a result of the accident, a 22-year-old male motorcyclist was pronounced dead at scene and his 23-year-old female pillion rider was conveyed to the hospital with serious injuries. The driver did not stop to render assistance to the injured and fled to Malaysia immediately after the accident. He also did not report the accident to the Police within 24 hours.
Through extensive ground inquiries and with the aid of video footage from witnesses, Land Transport Authority, Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and Police cameras, officers from the Traffic Police and ICA established the vehicle registration number of the car and the identity of the involved driver on the same day. On 7 February 2024 at about 3.20pm, the driver was arrested when he tried to enter Singapore via Woodlands Checkpoint.
The man will be charged in court on 9 February 2024 for the following offences:
- Dangerous drivng causing death under Section 64(2)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961;
- Dangerous driving causing grievous hurt under Section 64(2A)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961;
- Failing to stop after an accident under Section 84(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961;
- Failing to report an accident within 24 hours under Section 84(2) of the Road Traffic Act 1961; and
- Failing to render assistance to the injured under Section 84(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1961.
The offence of dangerous driving causing death carries an imprisonment term of not less than two years and not more than eight years; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles. The offence of dangerous driving causing grievous hurt carries an imprisonment term of not less than one year and not more than five years; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.
The offences of failing to stop after an accident, failing to lodge report within 24 hours after an accident and failing to render assistance to the injured, carries a fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment for a term of up three months or both for each of the offences.
Motorists who are involved in accidents should stop and render assistance to the road users involved, such as calling for an ambulance to provide medical attention to the injured. It is an offence to leave an accident scene without rendering assistance or making a report within 24 hours. The Traffic Police will not hesitate to take firm action against motorists who choose to flout traffic laws and endanger the safety of other road users.
