Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Malathi Muthu Veran has assumed command of Airport Police Division (APD) on 14 February 2024. She takes over from AC Alvin Chong [张法算], who assumed the post of Director of Online Criminal Harm Act Office.

AC Malathi, 47, joined the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in 1999. She has served 24 years with the SPF and has held several key appointments including Deputy Director (Security and Readiness) of the Operations Department, Deputy Commander of Police Transport Security Command, and Deputy Director (International Partnerships and Strategic Relations) of the International Cooperation and Partnerships Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). She was also the first female representative selected to head the liaison office in Bangkok during her secondment to INTERPOL.

AC Chong, 49, who was appointed Commander of APD on 22 April 2021, joined the SPF in 1999. In his 24 years with the SPF, he has held several key appointments including Deputy Commander of the Police Coast Guard, and Deputy Director (Resource Planning) of the Planning and Organisation Division in the Ministry of Home Affairs. He was also Head Special Investigation Section of the Criminal Investigation Department.

As Commander of APD, AC Chong advanced APD’s Transformation Plan and rolled out capabilities which enhanced police presence and enabled better incident management and post incident investigations such as deploying video analytics and patrol robots. He launched the Airport Workers on Watch, a SPF Community Watch Scheme which onboarded airport staff to ensure the safety and security of the airports. AC Chong also oversaw the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation security audit which validated Singapore’s aviation security regime and reaffirmed the robustness of its aviation security framework and processes.

Reflecting on his tenure as Commander of APD, AC Chong said: “I am honoured to be given an opportunity to lead Airport Police Division and work alongside dedicated officers, including our Police National Servicemen and volunteer officers. The officers’ dedication to duty and the unwavering support from their families have allowed us to achieve our mission of protecting Singapore’s civil aviation against crime. On behalf of APD, I would like to thank our airport stakeholders for working closely with us to ensure safe and secure air travels for passengers and making our airports the safest airports in the world.”
