The Police have arrested a 54-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of communicating false information of harmful thing.
On 6 June 2024 at about 8.30pm, the Police received a call from a male caller who informed that a gun was allegedly kept in the bonnet of a particular taxi. He added that the taxi would enter Singapore at one of the land checkpoints. The male caller did not provide his full particulars and chose to remain anonymous.
Acting on the given information from the male caller, the Police coordinated with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority to locate the said taxi. The taxi was eventually found and stopped at Woodlands checkpoint. After a thorough check, the Police concluded that the information provided by the male caller was false. Through follow-up investigations, the Police established the identity of the man and arrested him on 7 June 2024 at 1.10am.
The man will be charged in court on 8 June 2024 with the offence of communicating false information of harmful thing under Section 268A Penal Code 1871, punishable with imprisonment for a term of up to seven years, a fine which may extend to $50,000, or both.
The Police treat all security threats seriously and will not hesitate to take action against anyone who causes public alarm with false threats. Beyond the fear and inconvenience caused to other members of the public, the making of false threats comes at a cost of public resources that have to be deployed to deal with the incident.
