Two men, Parekh Shivam Nileshkumar (“Parekh”) and Patel Jaykumar Govindbhai (“Patel”), both aged 27 years old, and Vasoliya Dhruvil (“Vasoliva”), aged 23 years old, have been convicted and sentenced for attempted theft in dwelling with common intention, which is part of a series of shop theft cases that were committed along Orchard Road and Harbourfront Walk. Vasoliva was sentenced to 40 days’ imprisonment on 4 April 2024, Parekh was sentenced to 40 days’ imprisonment on 30 April 2024 and Patel was sentenced to 35 days’ imprisonment on 12 June 2024.
Three other men, aged 20 to 26, and three other women, aged 25 to 27, were sentenced on 22 November 2023 and 1 December 2023. Annex A sets out the details of the convictions.
On 16 October 2023, the Police were alerted to a case of attempted shop theft along Orchard Road. Through extensive ground enquiries and with the aid of images from Police cameras and CCTV footages, officers from Tanglin and Clementi Police Divisions established the identities of the nine persons and discovered that the group was involved in four other cases of shop theft. An operation was carried out on 30 October 2023 to arrest the group and more than 90 pieces of stolen clothing worth about $6,800 were recovered.
The Police have zero tolerance against such syndicated acts of crime and will spare no effort to apprehend such offenders, who will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.
The Police would also like to remind retailers to remain vigilant against shop thieves. Retailers are advised to adopt the following measures:
- Ensure a good line of sight for the displays by using an appropriate shop layout;
- Display advisory posters or signage against shop theft;
- Display expensive merchandise in locked showcases or at prominent locations (e.g. near cashier counters);
- Install CCTVs with recording system at the entrance/exit of the store to capture the facial features of shoppers; and
- Deploy adequate security personnel to patrol the premises in luminous vests for increased visual deterrence effect.
