The Police have arrested a 27-year-old man for his suspected involvement in a case of assisting with unlicensed moneylending business.

On 29 July 2024 at 7.10pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Jalan Grisek, where the house occupant received calls from loansharks demanding repayment. The loansharks also allegedly called for legitimate food delivery services and funeral services to the unit, in a bid to cause annoyance to the house occupant.

Through ground enquiries, officers from Bedok Police Division established the identity the man and arrested him on the same day. One mobile phone was seized as case exhibit.

The man will be charged in court on 31 July 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first time offenders, the offence of assisting with unlicensed moneylending business carries a fine between $30,000 and $300,000, with imprisonment of up to four years.

The Police have zero-tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
