Man To Be Charged For Suspected Involvement In Money Mule Activities

The Police have arrested a 20-year-old man for his suspected involvement in various offences connected to money mule activities, which include facilitating unauthorised access to computer materials and money laundering.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was allegedly promised commission by facilitating the unauthorised access, by withdrawing monies from Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and handing them over to his accomplice. The ATM cards used in withdrawing the monies were believed to be obtained through money mule activities.

Through extensive follow up and investigations, officers from Central Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on 5 August 2024. Two bank cards belonging to other individuals and two handphones belonging to the man were seized as case exhibits. Police’s efforts are ongoing for the search of the man’s accomplice.

The man will be charged in court on 6 August 2024. The offence of facilitating unauthorised access to computer material under Section 3(1) of the Computer Misuse Act 1993 carries an imprisonment term of up to two years, a fine, or both. The offence of money laundering under the Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits) Act 1992 carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years, a fine of up to $500,000, or both.

The Police take a serious stance against any person who may be involved in scams, and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law. To avoid becoming involved in money laundering activities, members of the public should always reject requests to use their personal bank accounts to receive and transfer money for others.
