The Police have arrested a 31-year-old man for injuring a police officer, driving dangerously, driving without a valid licence and suspected drug-related offences on 16 September 2024. He will be charged in court on 17 September 2024.
On 16 September 2024 at about 1.25am, a pair of Traffic Police (TP) officers was patrolling along Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway when they noticed a car travelling at a high speed. The driver was signalled to stop, but he did not comply and sped away, evading the pursuit of the officers. He did it in a dangerous manner, beating one red light before eventually crashing his car into a metal pole along Punggol Central. He then fled on foot, but the pursuing officers managed to stop him. While the officers were trying to detain the man, he bit one of the officers on his left arm. Despite his injury, the officer managed to subdue and arrest the man together with the support of other officers who had arrived swiftly as reinforcements. A search was conducted on the man. Drug paraphernalia was found in his possession.
The 26-year-old officer who was bitten suffered a bruise on his left arm. He was conveyed to hospital and subsequently discharged with two days of medical leave.
Investigations also revealed that the man was wanted by the Police for offering cash in February 2024 for his Singpass credentials. He had handed over his Singpass log-in details to an unknown party. Attempts to open bank accounts by the unknown party were unsuccessful.
The man will be charged for the following offences:
- One count of voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty under Section 332 of the Penal Code 1871, punishable with an imprisonment for a term of up to seven years, and a fine or caning;
- One count of dangerous driving under Section 64(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961, punishable with an imprisonment for a term of up to 12 months, or a fine of up to $5,000 or both;
- One count of driving without a valid licence under Section 35(1) of the Road Traffic Act 1961, punishable with an imprisonment for a term of up to three years, or a fine of up to $10,000, or both;
- One count of using a motor vehicle without insurance coverage under Section 3(1) of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act 1961, punishable with a fine of up to $1,000, or an imprisonment term of up to three months, or both; and
- One count of disclosure of password, access code, etc., in relation to national digital identity service under Section 8A(1)(a) read with Section 8A(3)(a) of the Computer Misuse Act 1993, punishable with an imprisonment term not exceeding three years, a fine not exceeding S$10,000 or both, for first-time offenders.
Investigations by CNB into the suspected drug-related offences are ongoing.
The Police have zero tolerance for such brazen acts of violence against police officers and will not hesitate to take firm action. TP also takes a serious view of motorists who drive without valid licences. Motorists who choose to flout traffic laws will face dire consequences.
