The Traffic Police (TP), Singapore Road Safety Council (SRSC), and the Automobile Association of Singapore (AAS), with support from the Ministry of Education and Tote Board, held the grand finals of the Singapore Traffic Games (STG) on Friday, 8 November 2024, at the Road Safety Community Park. Assoc Prof Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs & Ministry of National Development was the Guest-of-Honour for the event, which was attended by about 300 students and 60 guests. Please refer to Annex A for the event photographs.
The STG is an annual inter-school event that teaches primary school children good road safety practices and etiquette through practical sessions. Participants take on the roles of pedestrians, cyclists, and go-kart drivers, to instil important road safety habits and prepare them to be responsible road users as they grow up. Since its inception in 1958, the STG has been a cherished rite of passage for many generations of school children.
A total of 28 primary schools participated this year in the STG qualifying rounds, held from 29 to 31 July 2024, with 15 primary schools progressing to the finals. Riverside Primary School emerged as the champion, accumulating the lowest number of demerit points and winning the STG Challenge Trophy. The list of the top 10 winning schools is at Annex B.
Premier of Road Safety Video on Children Safety
During the event, TP premiered a new road safety video highlighting the potential dangers of unsupervised children near busy roads. The video depicts a serious accident involving a student who runs onto the road between parked cars, resulting in an accident with an oncoming vehicle. The video serves as a stark reminder to family members, guardians, teachers and caregivers, to always supervise children near busy roads, and teach them about the dangers of crossing between parked vehicles without supervision.
Chairman of the Singapore Road Safety Council, Mr Bernard Tay said, “The Singapore Traffic Games isn’t just about learning traffic rules — it’s about inculcating the practice of good road safety habits and responsible road use in the young in a fun and interactive way. At the same time, they learn about real-life skills that will help them look out for themselves and others on the road. I am proud to see the enthusiasm of our young learners and the dedication of our partners, working together towards a safer and more mindful road culture in Singapore.”
Commander (Covering) of Traffic Police, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police Lionel Bok said, “For more than 60 years, the Singapore Traffic Games has been a key component of our road safety education efforts. The new video campaign enhances our suite of education programmes. While we are tough on enforcement, education plays an equally crucial role in preventing accidents involving children. We urge all road users to abide by traffic laws and be extra cautious in areas populated with children, such as school zones. Let’s protect our children by being responsible and safe road users.”
TP remains committed to enhancing road safety, especially for children. While TP continues our educational and engagement efforts with our stakeholders and partners, we would like to remind all road users that road safety is a shared responsibility. Let's work together to create a safer road environment by driving and riding responsibly, as well as setting a good example for our young ones.
