The Police have arrested two men, aged 19 and 27, for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.
On 29 October 2024 and 4 November 2024, the Police were alerted to two separate cases of loanshark harassment at two residential units along Anchorvale Road and Punggol Place, where the door of the unit in the second case was splashed with paint and debtor’s notes were left behind for both cases.
Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras and closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs), officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identities of both men and arrested them on 8 November 2024. Three debtor’s notes were seized as case exhibits.
The two men will be charged in court on 9 November 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.
The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
