Two men, aged 42 and 64, will be charged in court on 13 November 2024 with dangerous driving causing grievous hurt. Another two men, aged 34 and 55, will be charged on the same day with driving without reasonable consideration causing grievous hurt.
The details of the cases are as follows:
- On 14 September 2024, a 64-year-old male lorry driver failed to stop at the red light along Jurong Town Hall Road towards West Coast Road, resulting in a collision with a motorcycle that had the right of way. The motorcyclist sustained grievous injuries. The lorry driver will be charged with the offence of dangerous driving causing grievous hurt under Section 64(2A)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961.
- On 11 March 2024, a 55-year-old man was making a lane change along Sims Avenue East, when his car collided with a cyclist who was travelling straight along the road. The cyclist sustained grievous injuries. The driver will be charged with the offence of driving without reasonable consideration causing grievous hurt under Section 65(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1961.
- On 8 January 2024, a 34-year-old man was driving his car along Hougang Avenue 9, when he collided with a motorcycle while making a right turn. The motorcyclist sustained grievous injuries. The driver will be charged with the offence of driving without reasonable consideration causing grievous hurt under Section 65(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1961.
- On 16 April 2023, a 42-year-old male driver failed to stop at the red light along New Bridge Road towards Kampong Bahru Road, resulting in a collision with another car that had the right of way. The driver of the other car, and the two passengers in the offender’s car sustained grievous injuries. He will be charged with the offence of dangerous driving causing grievous hurt under Section 64(2A)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961.
The offence of dangerous driving causing grievous hurt under Section 64(2A)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a jail term between one and five years; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, motorists are liable to a jail term between two and ten years; and disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles.
The offence of driving without reasonable consideration causing grievous hurt under Section 65(3) of the Road Traffic Act 1961 carries a fine of up to $5,000, a jail term of up to two years, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, motorists are liable to a fine of up to $10,000, a jail term of up to four years, or both.
The Traffic Police takes a serious view of those who drive in a manner that endangers their safety and that of other road users. All motorists are urged to abide by traffic laws to keep our roads safe for everyone. The Traffic Police will continue to take firm action against errant motorists.
