Direct Recruitment For New Special Operations Group (SOG)

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) will be forming the Special Operations Group (SOG), which will consist of the SPF’s most highly trained units tasked with hostage rescue on land and/or maritime environments. They are the Special Operations Command’s Special Tactics and Rescue (STAR) Unit, the Police Coast Guard’s Special Task Squadron (STS) and the Gurkha Contingent’s Gurkha Special Action Group (GSAG).

The SOG will provide a formal operational structure that has command and control over the tactical units when activated for complex public security incidents. The SOG aims to leverage on the various units’ expertise to achieve a force multiplier effect when resolving the incident.

After its formation, the SOG will be activated for complex public security incidents. This complexity can arise from the presence of multiple incident sites, large area of operations or the need for different specialised capabilities residing in the different units.

SOG Selection Course

As part of the journey towards SOG's formation, the inaugural SOG Selection Course was held from November 2023 till July 2024. This SOG Selection Course replaced the individual selection and training courses previously conducted by the STAR Unit, STS, and GSAG. It aims to impart the same tactics, techniques and procedures required for interoperability between the units during an SOG operation.

The SPF will be launching a video series on the inaugural SOG Selection Course, that follows selected candidates from the beginning till the end of the course. The first episode would be released on 29 November 2024, with subsequent episodes being released on a weekly basis.

Upcoming Recruitment Exercise

The SPF will be conducting a direct recruitment exercise from 1 January 2025 to 31 January 2025 for the next SOG Selection Course. Successful candidates will join the STAR Unit or STS after graduation. The Careers@Gov application link will be made available on the SPF’s social media pages on 1 January 2025.
