The Police have arrested two men, aged 35 and 44, for their suspected involvement in a case of loanshark harassment.
On 3 December 2024 at about 7.20pm, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, where the gate of the unit was locked with a bicycle lock and a debtor’s note was left at the gate.
Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras and closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs), officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identities of both men and arrested them on 5 December 2024. One bicycle lock, one debtor’s note and one mobile phone were seized as case exhibits. Preliminary investigations revealed that the two men are believed to be involved in other loanshark harassment cases islandwide.
The 35-year-old man will be charged in court on 7 December 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes. Investigations against the 44-year-old man are ongoing.
The Police have zero tolerance for loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disrupt public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not work with or assist them in any way. The public can call ‘999’ if they suspect or know of anyone involved in loansharking activities.
