The Police have arrested a 32-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of loanshark harassment.
In the first case, on 22 December 2024, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment at a residential unit along Canberra Street, where the main gate was sprayed with red paint and a bicycle lock was secured to it. Graffiti was found sprayed on the wall beside the unit and a debtor’s note was left behind.
Through follow-up investigations and with the aid of images from Police cameras, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the woman and arrested her on 24 December 2024. A debtor’s note was seized as case exhibit.
In the second case, on 24 December 2024, the Police were alerted to a case of loanshark harassment along Woodlands Drive 44, where the main door and gate of two residential units were splashed with red paint.
Through prompt response and follow-up investigations, officers from Woodlands Police Division arrested the man on the same day. Five cans of paint were seized as case exhibit.
Both persons will be charged in court on 26 December 2024 under the Moneylenders Act 2008. For first-time offenders, the offence of loanshark harassment carries a fine between $5,000 and $50,000, with imprisonment of up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.
The Police have zero tolerance against loanshark harassment activities. Those who deliberately vandalise properties, cause annoyance or disruption to public safety, peace and security, will be dealt with severely in accordance with the law.
Members of the public are advised to stay away from loansharks and not to work with or assist them in any way. The public can call the Police at ‘999’ if they suspect or know of anyone who could be involved in loansharking activities.
